Preach My Gospel

God chooses one man at a time to speak for, guide, and lead His people upon the earth.  This man is known as THE PROPHET.  His most important job is as a forthteller:  telling God's people what His whish and will is for them as a whole.  At times, the prophet may also be a foreteller:  someone who forecasts future events to warn and/or prepare God's people for them.

The Gift of Prophecy is related to the gifts that THE PROPHET has in that they are of the same source and are obtained in much the same way.  However, the Gift of Prophecy is not restricted to just one man.

A prophet is anyone who has a testimony of Christ through the Holy Ghost.

Having an active testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ, can give one:
  1. A depth of perception of the things of Heaven.  (As Joseph Smith said..."A man can learn more by one glimpse into the Heavens than by all the books ever written on the subject."
  2. A clarity of understanding of God's wish and  will for His spirit Children.

Through this they gain and understanding of God's will in their own lives and the lives of their loved ones.

On occasion more than this may be required in a person's stewardship.  For example:

  1. An official in a government office that possesses this gift may receive aid from God in leading the people over which he governs.
  2. A teenager babysitting may receive a prophetic prompting that helps her to keep her charges safe.
  3. One may receive promptings related to their foreordained mission upon the earth.  For example:  John the Baptist, Joseph Smith, Esther, Mary and her cousin Elizabeth, etc.
  4. One may receive prophetic promptings designed to guide to a heart's desire and allow a witness to others of God and His work.  For example:  Anna the prophetess  and Simeon in the New Testament.

An active testimony of Christ means that one not only believes in Him but also ACTS upon that belief.  It is an undeniable truth that if one does not act upon the promptings received, those promptings become less frequent and may even disappear entirely.

In order to gain the gift of propehcy one must:

  1. Gain a testimony of Christ (through seeking, work, and studying diligently).
  2. Live as righteously as possible.
  3. Fast and pray much.
  4. Have a sound understanding of God through diligent study of His word and works.

One cannot hope to maintain this gift without diligence in their own lives and an eye to God.  The gifts of prophecy and revelation require an "open line" to God.  This is very similar to using a cell phone.

If you wander out of the cell phone's range, the signal weakens and eventually dies.  So it is with God. If we wander from Him and close that door, He can no longer "communicate" with us.  This is not because He is not able to do so (the connection still exists) but because we simply are not where we can listen to Him.  We make ourselves unable to hear by moving away from Him.  He did not move.

Examples/Stories

  1. A prophetic vision/dream--Revelations 8:6-13 will occur in the year 2057.

A PERSON WITH THE GIFT OF PROPHECY WILL ALWAYS HAVE A SURE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST.  IT SEEMS THAT A PERSON CAN HAVE THIS GIFT TO A STRONGER DEGREE THAN ANOTHER BASED UPON THEIR LEVEL OF PERSONAL RIGHTEOUSNESS AND GODLY VIRTUE.
